Dr. Wilmer J. Leon, III | "The Dream" Remains a Vision

Dr. Wilmer J. Leon III, Truthout: "On August 28, 1963, during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and delivered one of the most famous speeches in world history, "I Have A Dream." What has troubled me over the years is how Dr. King, the visionary, prophet, and revolutionary's vision, action, and ultimate sacrifice have been hijacked, compromised, and relegated to being those of just a dreamer."

Can a Mother Lose Her Child Because She Doesn't Speak English?

Tim Padgett with Dolly Mascarenas, TIME Magazine: "Can the U.S. government take a woman's baby from her because she doesn't speak English? That's the latest question to arise in the hothouse debate over illegal immigration, as an undocumented woman from impoverished rural Mexico - who speaks only an obscure indigenous language - fights in a Mississippi court to regain custody of her infant daughter."

Honduras: Lessons From the Coup: Or, Why Are We in Honduras Anyhow?
Sunday 30 August 2009
by: John Lamperti, t r u t h o u t | Perspective

The June 28 military coup that overthrew the legitimate government of Honduras was a shock. When the Central American wars of the 1980s finally ended, the region seemed on a path toward electoral democracy at last. The military's ouster of President Zelaya, followed by the suspension of civil liberties and repression of non-violent protests, looks like a return to the bad old days when coups were the rule and real elections the rare exception. Washington - As the Obama administration and Democrats wrangled over health care overhaul efforts during the first half of the year, the Democratic Party's Blue Dog political-action committee was receiving more than half of its $1.1 million in campaign contributions from the pharmaceutical, health care and health insurance industries, according to watchdog organizations. J. Sri Raman | A Non-Islamic No to Religious Profiling

J. Sri Raman, Truthout: "Reports of religious profiling in the US have given rise to many a raging controversy before. But this one is different. The latest instance has provoked a national outrage this time in a non-Islamic country - India. India has still not stopped talking about the reported detention and questioning of one of the shiniest of India's movie stars at the Newark Airport on August 15, coincidentally the county's Independence Day." Mahbod Seraji | Thirty Years Later ...

An Iranian woman whose daughter was killed in post-election violence prays at the grave of Neda Agha Soltan, another victim of the backlash against the opposition. (Photo: AP)

Mahbod Seraji, Truthout: "As the 40th day of Neda's death was commemorated in Iran a few days ago, and as I read in an article on Truthout on August 11 that a staggering number of 4,000 people were detained in protests that followed June's disputed presidential election, I was reminded of my years there as a high school student just before the Islamic Revolution subdued the country and cast it into a nightmare from which it is still trying to awaken 30 years later." In Oxford, England, residents hold a demonstration as floods ravage their city. A growing global movement is using direct action to combat policies that exacerbate climate change. (Photo: Chris Ison / PA)

Mark Engler, TomDispatch.com: "In the early morning of October 8, 2007, a small group of British Greenpeace activists slipped inside a hulking smokestack that towers more than 600 feet above a coal-fired power plant in Kent, England. While other activists cut electricity on the plant's grounds, they prepared to climb the interior of the structure to its top, rappel down its outside, and paint in block letters a demand that Prime Minister Gordon Brown put an end to plants like the Kingsnorth facility, which releases nearly 20,000 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each day."
