Readings show Four Corners marker off by 2.5 miles
From Associated Press
April 20, 2009 7:44 PM EDT

SALT LAKE CITY - Tourists who think they're putting a hand or foot in each of four states at the Four Corners area are apparently missing the mark - by about 2.5 miles. National Geodetic Survey officials say the Four Corners marker showing the intersection of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah is about 2.5 miles west of where it should be.
The only place in the United States where four state boundaries come together was first surveyed by the government in 1868 during the initial survey of Colorado's southern boundary. The survey was inaccurate.
Officials said Monday the accurate location lies to the east of U.S. 160 in Colorado and northeast of the San Juan River as it flows into New Mexico.

SF May Sue Postal Service
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KCBS) - Low income San Francisco residents who live in residential hotels don't get direct mail service.
The City Attorney is threatening to sue the U.S. Postal Service if it doesn't change its practice.
The postal service acknowledges that mail is dropped off at the residential hotels in one single pile and is not separated and put into individual lock boxes. For tenants at the low income housing complexes as well as City Attorney Dennis Herrera, that's a big problem. "There are folks who have been diagnosed with cancer and they didn't receive their diagnosis until a year later," explained Herrera. "Folks who get disability payments and checks that they rely on to live that they haven't received. These are direct impacts on people."

The post office says it is national postal service policy to not deliver mail to individuals at hotels. Herrera says the policy is wrong because it is discriminatory and wrecks havoc on the lives of the most vulnerable.
He's sent a formal letter of demand to the U.S. Attorney to change the policy, and says he'll file a lawsuit if that doesn't happen.

Journalism's Confession: Playing Twister ... to the Right
Wednesday 15 April 2009
by: Will Bunch @ The Philadelphia Daily News

"It's so true that freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose... to accommodate the perceived notion that the news media warps things so far to the left, journalists have been playing Twister to bend over backwards to accommodate conservatives -- and tying ourselves in knots." (More)

Excerpts From A Crappy Cat's Daily Crap...

Day 983 of my captivity...

My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects.  They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets.

Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.

The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape.  In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet.

Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet.  I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of.  However, they merely made condescending comments about what a 'good little hunter' I am.  Bastards.

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight.  I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event.  However, I could hear the noises and smell the food.  I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of 'allergies.'  I must learn what this means and how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking.  I must try this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches.  The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to return.  He is obviously retarded.

The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicating with the guards regularly.  I am certain that he reports my every move.  My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe.  For now................

The Bush Six
Monday 13 April 2009
by: Jane Mayer  |  Visit article original @ The New Yorker

About a year ago, a book came out in England that made a fascinating prediction: at some point in the future, the author wrote, six top officials in the Bush Administration would get a tap on the shoulder announcing that they were being arrested on international charges of torture...

... Meanwhile, Sands reiterated a warning that he made in his book. "If I were they," he said, referring to the former officials in question, "I would think carefully before setting foot outside the United States. They are now, and forever in the future, at risk of arrest. Until this is sorted out, they are in their own legal black hole." <More>

The Scream and the Drone
Thursday 09 April 2009
by: J. Sri Raman, t r u t h o u t | Perspective

The scream of 17-year-old Chand Bibi of the Swat Valley has been heard across Pakistan for over a week now. The drone of remotely operated US gunships over the country's mountainous western frontier has been heard for months.

What the world needs to hear now is the voice of Pakistan in response to both the scream and the drone.
